The campsite
The campsite is now "under new management": Ben and Caroline Gillett bought the business in January 2008 from Chris and Christine Savill, who are now enjoying their well-earned retirement.
Ben and Caroline have lived on St. Martin's since 1992, and have two young children, Jack and Ella.
Our season
We are open from 14 March until 13 October. Booking is essential for Whitsun week, and for the last two weeks of June through to the end of August. You are most welcome to turn up unannounced at any other time. See our Bookings page for further information.
Location
The site (the only one in Scilly with an English Tourist Board four-star rating) lies in a sun trap behind the sand-dune belt close to Middletown. Comprised of one large and two smaller fields, it is sheltered by tall evergreen hedges - a legacy of the days when the campsite was part of a flower farm and these fields were used to grow the daffodils for which Scilly is famous.
We are lincensed for 50 pitches which occupy a shallow depression, so most of the ground is flat, whilst those pitches around the perimeter tend to be on slightly sloping ground. Due to the limit on pitches there is always a great feeling of space on the site.
Facilities
The site has a superb modern facilities building (built with the aid of an ETB grant) which comprises:
- eight toilets
- eight hot and cold water wash basins
- four coin-operated showers (£1.00 for 7 minutes)
- two coin-operated hair-dryers
- baby-changing facilities
- two external sinks for washing-up.
There is also a separate laundry, with two industrial strength washing machines, a tumble dryer, a spin-dryer, two sinks for hand-washing and an iron/ironing board. The washing machines and the tumble dryer use tokens which are available from Ben and Caroline at their house in Middletown. The spin-dryer is coin-operated (50p) as is the iron (20p).
Please note that although dogs are not allowed to stay on the campsite, they may be present at times, especially our collie "Nettle"
Water
All our water is sourced from our own bore-hole, so it is clear, cold and chemical free. It is filtered and passed through a ultra violet light, and is regularly checked by the local authority to ensure it meets the required standards. There are 3 stand-pipes on the campsite which provide drinking water, and buckets may be filled at the facilities or laundry to take back to your tent.
The Barn
Eggs and seasonal vegetables are generally available.
Charging
Mobile 'phones, cameras, torches etc can be charged up in the tractor barn adjacent to the road in Middletown. This facility is provided at your own risk and is free of charge, though we would appreciate your donation to the RNLI using the collection box provided.
Freezer Packs
There are 2 freezers for campers' ice-packs: please make sure your ice-packs are labelled with your name. There is a small charge of 50p per ice pack per week.
Gas Cylinders
are available for hire or exchange in the following sizes:
| Calor Gas (butane) | 4.5kg; 7kg; 15kg |
| Camping Gaz | 901; 904, 907 |
We also have for sale a large range of disposable gas canisters, paraffin, methylated spirits and disposable barbeques.
Camping equipment
We do not hire equipment, though we do carry a variety of small spares e.g. pegs, rubber rings, Duck tape etc.
